YouTube & Video Marketing

YouTube & Video Marketing

The challenge is to have – or find – an extremely popular video. This method can take a long time to develop if you’re starting from scratch. But in this chapter I’m giving you a few tips including an amazing little secret for how you can tap into the success of an already-viral video and capitalize on it! YouTube is by no means the only game in town. In fact, there are plenty of other excellent video sites where many of the tips here will apply very well. This said, YouTube is the run-away leader in the field, so let’s start there. It never ceases to amaze me what people choose to watch! Some of the most popular videos on YouTube are amazingly pedestrian and uninspired. And yet… many of them have MILLIONS of views! If you have a video that’s gone viral, what do you do? Do you just congratulate yourself and carry on regardless? Or do you attempt to monetize some of that traffic? And what if you DON’T have a viral video? Do you still have a chance to somehow tap into all that mad traffic? The answer to these questions is a definite YES on all counts. We’re looking at two ways (at least) to monetize YouTube. First, you have (or are about to have) some videos and you’d like to use them to drive traffic to your page; Second, you don’t have your own vids, but would still like to tap into that traffic stream. Let’s look at the first case first. Promoting Your Own Videos. I’m assuming you already have your videos, and...

SEO & Keywords

SEO & Keywords

SEO – Search Engine Optimization The #1 SEO challenge is to find the best keyword or key-phrase around which to build your campaign. Once you have that, you need to optimize your site(s) around that keyword so as to best take advantage of it. If you can discover the best high-search but low-competition keyword, your Google rank for THAT particular keyword will be tops – and you will automatically attract clickthroughs. In my experience so far, as well as that of others, if you get your keywords right, you can really get some meaningful traffic, if you’re operating in a popular niche. Use SEO/keyword optimization techniques to discover the best keywords for your page. To do that, use Google, SpyFu as well as the Google Keyword Tool to start with. There are more tools as well, which I’ll tell you about in due course. Keywords can be short of long (a.k.a. “key phrases” or “long-tail keywords”), and it goes without saying that the short ones are the toughest to dominate. They’re all taken and you’ll probably never rank very high with any of them. If you have an indie music website, for example, and you thus feel that one of your keywords should definitely be “indie music”, you’ll discover that your page will be listed at the bottom of the search results on page 999,999 – in other words: no one will ever find it! I just typed “indie music” into Google and I got 51,800,000 results! Ugh… “Long keywords” to the rescue. If your site specializes in really cool new indie music – use THAT very phrase and...
Link Exchange

Link Exchange

The challenge here is to just keep doing it. This method can be very laborious – unless you pay. If you stick with it, you WILL see greatly increased traffic, although the early stages can be a little disappointing. In my experience this is not a “quick fix” at least not in its free form. Still – you MUST know about it. (See also “backlinks“) Link referrals are superbly important. That’s sites that link to you and thus increase your visibility. But getting a large number of those, or directing traffic from other sites to yours in a “sufficiently” high volume requires a very organized approach. In fact, the amount of work you WOULD have to do if there were no tools to help you with this, would be staggering. But – thankfully – there are some tools out there. Special sites which specialize in link exchanges and referrals. One such site is LinkReferral and another good one is EasyHits4U. There are dozens of others too. LinkReferral has some truly baffling baffling rules (like you can only review 5 sites per day – unless you upgrade your membership), and other such little idiosyncrasies. EasyHits4U is better organized and it even installs a toolbar which helps you surf sites and view their squeeze pages (95% of all content is like that!). This is, in truth, another one of those jobs that is probably better outsourced! Most of these sites use similar methods – visit X number of sites and you’ll be eligible for X number visits back to your site. You can also trade links with other sites using some...
Free Ads & Classifieds

Free Ads & Classifieds

This is most certainly the age of FREE, and advertising on the web is no exception. You can get your ads placed for free on a wide variety of sites. Some may only agree to give you a link, others will be happy to place an ad text for you, and others may even agree to display an advertising image (or even video!) for you (e.g. a banner). The most typical place to display your free ad is on classified ads sites. There are thousands of them out there. Simply google “free ads” and you’ll see millions of results right away. The #1 classified ad site in the world is, of course, www.craigslist.com. Among other popular free ad destinations are sites such as www.classifiedsforfree.com, www.freeadposting.com, www.adsglobe.com and WorldStuffer. The Methodology The challenge is to cut through the clutter. This method can be very effective as long as you know how to design a short, catchy ad – or a small but powerful image. The classified ad sites get tremendous traffic, so there’s definitely a lot of people there who COULD become YOUR customers. You can place text ads or image ads there and as long as you follow their posting rules and use good keywords targeted at a narrow niche, there is no reason why this method shouldn’t work very well. The general rule is that the “best” ads are image-driven, but if you can write great copy – who knows. The title of your ad is key. Conquer fear through knowledge! Some cls ad sites are really good – especially craigslist.com. You can promot text or image. Create...
Maps And Mashups

Maps And Mashups

The principle behind this is very simple. If your company location is linked to a map, you can thus increase your visibility by showing up in regional searches. In some cases it may be considered beneficial to target traffic in specific geographical areas. Some marketers establish multiple identities on the web, in multiple geographical areas for this very reason. Slightly underhanded? Yep. Effective? It can be. It’s widely considered a great additional traffic hole that needs plugging up! What Exactly Is a Mashup? A mashup, according to Wikipedia, is a website or application that combines content from more than one source into an integrated experience. What is a mashup mashup? A mashup mashup is a website or application that combines content from more than one mashup. What’s a maps mashup? A maps mashup takes content from multiple sources and displays them in map...
Email Campaigns

Email Campaigns

The challenge is NOT TO SPAM. This method is my least favorite, even when mailing my own list. An email campaign once in a while is fine by me, if targeted at people who explicitly agreed to it and, ideally, asked for it, but anything more than that is playing with fire. I recently signed up to a traffic generation service which looked really interesting and informative. I knew I wasn’t going to have time to get into it seriously for some days yet, but I wanted to also make sure that I signed up, filed my signup email and remembered to get back to them as soon as I had a moment. But I didn’t foresee what what going to happen next. I now receive NO LESS than 50 emails PER DAY from them. If I wanted to read all those email I would do nothing else! I tried unsubscribing, and in spite of their messages assuring me that I can indeed unsubscribe, doing so has proven DIFFICULT. In fact, I still didn’t manage to do it. I spam-blocked them. I didn’t unsubscribe yet because I didn’t have enough time – and – because I DID find SOME of their content interesting. So now, I both like them just a little bit and HATE their guts at the same time. They don’t seem to care. Well… they ain’t getting my business! Some people are so sensitive to unsolicited emails that it borders on insanity. I had some folks sign up to my list in order to get something from one of my sites, and then after a year...
Family And Friends

Family And Friends

Now, here’s one method which is widely overlooked – to the point of stunning. Almost everyone knows at least a handful of people on the web. Surely, you do too! Well, that’s your first dozen or even a hundred contacts whom you can approach with (hopefully) less trepidation than any stranger! These are the natural FIRST prospects for you. Even if all they do is give you feedback, that too is priceless. And who knows, some of them may well be in the market for some of the products or services you offer! Construct a short, friendly, business-like but unpretentious email and ask them for their support. Or, perhaps, combine that with a request to pass your email on to THEIR friends. Only in that case make sure you got your email signature...
Backlinks

Backlinks

A “backlink” or a “link in” is a reference to your site which can be found on some other site. This is also known as “link popularity.” The more sites are linked up to yours, the more respect it will get from Google – and some other engines. Additionally, if the sites linking to your site have a high “page rank” (Google’s somewhat flawed “influence” or “importance” ranking system), then your site will benefit even more. Oh, and also, if the sites linking to you are RELATED to your site, that’s even better. This is the official version. The reality is somewhat different. If you run some tests on this, you will discover quite quickly that the page rank (PR) of the site linking in doesn’t seem to matter all that much after all. You’ll still find many “gurus” who insist that it does. Test it for yourself, and you’ll see I’m right. As for the linked sites being related – well, this too doesn’t stand the test of… erm… TESTING. After quite extensive experimentation, I can tell you for sure that it doesn’t matter what the linked-in site is about. As long as it links to you. There’s one more myth out there which is now generally acknowledged. Reciprocal links are NOT as valuable as ONE-WAY links. So, when you spend a lot of time on some of those link exchange sites, just be aware of that. A thousand reciprocal links are worth less than 50 ONE-WAY links. That’s just my estimate and it could be a bit more or less. Does this mean that you shouldn’t do...
Article Marketing

Article Marketing

The challenge with article marketing is to have engaging content and to provide some real solutions that address people’s needs. This method can be wonderfully effective if your articles are informative and useful. I do not believe this can be as effective as some marketers say, if your content is average or low quality. It just wouldn’t make sense to me. The whole idea is to get your name out there, establish yourself as a Go-To source for your niche, and attract visits to your site as a result. It REALLY works – if your articles are informative and well-written. When I submitted my first article to eZineArticles I got 13 clickthroughs to my blog within 24 hours! And two of them signed up. That’s NOT bad at all. While there are MANY excellent article sites out there, I would recommend eZineArticles to start with – easy, powerful and the biggest of them all. But all you need to do is Google “article sites” and you’ll soon discover there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of them out there. Many are also very worthwhile. Also Google “content distribution” for more ideas on this subject, but before I move on, just keep in mind that your articles must be unique and original, should be keyword-rich, and as a result you’ll need to know exactly which niche your article is targeted at. If you get it right, you WILL attract traffic. Another excellent writing-related resource are review sites. You’re expected to review other sites – and others review yours. But not only sites. You can review products, companies and anything else you can...
