Maps And Mashups

Maps And Mashups

The principle behind this is very simple. If your company location is linked to a map, you can thus increase your visibility by showing up in regional searches. In some cases it may be considered beneficial to target traffic in specific geographical areas. Some marketers establish multiple identities on the web, in multiple geographical areas for this very reason. Slightly underhanded? Yep. Effective? It can be. It’s widely considered a great additional traffic hole that needs plugging up! What Exactly Is a Mashup? A mashup, according to Wikipedia, is a website or application that combines content from more than one source into an integrated experience. What is a mashup mashup? A mashup mashup is a website or application that combines content from more than one mashup. What’s a maps mashup? A maps mashup takes content from multiple sources and displays them in map...
Email Campaigns

Email Campaigns

The challenge is NOT TO SPAM. This method is my least favorite, even when mailing my own list. An email campaign once in a while is fine by me, if targeted at people who explicitly agreed to it and, ideally, asked for it, but anything more than that is playing with fire. I recently signed up to a traffic generation service which looked really interesting and informative. I knew I wasn’t going to have time to get into it seriously for some days yet, but I wanted to also make sure that I signed up, filed my signup email and remembered to get back to them as soon as I had a moment. But I didn’t foresee what what going to happen next. I now receive NO LESS than 50 emails PER DAY from them. If I wanted to read all those email I would do nothing else! I tried unsubscribing, and in spite of their messages assuring me that I can indeed unsubscribe, doing so has proven DIFFICULT. In fact, I still didn’t manage to do it. I spam-blocked them. I didn’t unsubscribe yet because I didn’t have enough time – and – because I DID find SOME of their content interesting. So now, I both like them just a little bit and HATE their guts at the same time. They don’t seem to care. Well… they ain’t getting my business! Some people are so sensitive to unsolicited emails that it borders on insanity. I had some folks sign up to my list in order to get something from one of my sites, and then after a year...
Family And Friends

Family And Friends

Now, here’s one method which is widely overlooked – to the point of stunning. Almost everyone knows at least a handful of people on the web. Surely, you do too! Well, that’s your first dozen or even a hundred contacts whom you can approach with (hopefully) less trepidation than any stranger! These are the natural FIRST prospects for you. Even if all they do is give you feedback, that too is priceless. And who knows, some of them may well be in the market for some of the products or services you offer! Construct a short, friendly, business-like but unpretentious email and ask them for their support. Or, perhaps, combine that with a request to pass your email on to THEIR friends. Only in that case make sure you got your email signature...
Backlinks

Backlinks

A “backlink” or a “link in” is a reference to your site which can be found on some other site. This is also known as “link popularity.” The more sites are linked up to yours, the more respect it will get from Google – and some other engines. Additionally, if the sites linking to your site have a high “page rank” (Google’s somewhat flawed “influence” or “importance” ranking system), then your site will benefit even more. Oh, and also, if the sites linking to you are RELATED to your site, that’s even better. This is the official version. The reality is somewhat different. If you run some tests on this, you will discover quite quickly that the page rank (PR) of the site linking in doesn’t seem to matter all that much after all. You’ll still find many “gurus” who insist that it does. Test it for yourself, and you’ll see I’m right. As for the linked sites being related – well, this too doesn’t stand the test of… erm… TESTING. After quite extensive experimentation, I can tell you for sure that it doesn’t matter what the linked-in site is about. As long as it links to you. There’s one more myth out there which is now generally acknowledged. Reciprocal links are NOT as valuable as ONE-WAY links. So, when you spend a lot of time on some of those link exchange sites, just be aware of that. A thousand reciprocal links are worth less than 50 ONE-WAY links. That’s just my estimate and it could be a bit more or less. Does this mean that you shouldn’t do...
Article Marketing

Article Marketing

The challenge with article marketing is to have engaging content and to provide some real solutions that address people’s needs. This method can be wonderfully effective if your articles are informative and useful. I do not believe this can be as effective as some marketers say, if your content is average or low quality. It just wouldn’t make sense to me. The whole idea is to get your name out there, establish yourself as a Go-To source for your niche, and attract visits to your site as a result. It REALLY works – if your articles are informative and well-written. When I submitted my first article to eZineArticles I got 13 clickthroughs to my blog within 24 hours! And two of them signed up. That’s NOT bad at all. While there are MANY excellent article sites out there, I would recommend eZineArticles to start with – easy, powerful and the biggest of them all. But all you need to do is Google “article sites” and you’ll soon discover there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of them out there. Many are also very worthwhile. Also Google “content distribution” for more ideas on this subject, but before I move on, just keep in mind that your articles must be unique and original, should be keyword-rich, and as a result you’ll need to know exactly which niche your article is targeted at. If you get it right, you WILL attract traffic. Another excellent writing-related resource are review sites. You’re expected to review other sites – and others review yours. But not only sites. You can review products, companies and anything else you can...
Directory Submissions

Directory Submissions

Submit Your Site to Key Directories! A link from a directory will help your ranking — and get you traffic. A directory is not a search engine. Rather, it is a hierarchical listing of sites sorted according to category and subcategory. Be sure to list your site in the free Open Directory Project (www.dmoz.com), overseen by overworked volunteer editors. But if you don’t get listed right away, don’t be impatient and resubmit, or you’ll go to the end of the queue. A link in this directory will help you a lot. Yahoo! Directory (dir.yahoo.com) is another important directory. Real humans read each submission, so be careful to follow the instructions given. Hint: Use somewhat less than the maximum number of characters allowable, so you don’t have wordy text that will tempt the Yahoo! editor to begin chopping. Yahoo! Directory Submit (ecom.yahoo.com/dir/submit/intro/) requires a $299 annual recurring fee to have your site considered for inclusion within seven business days. Other paid business directories that might help are About.com and Business.com. Also Submit Your Site to Trade Organization Sites and Specialized Directories. Some directories focused on particular industries, such as education or finance. You probably belong to various trade associations that feature member directories. Ask for a link. Even if you have to pay something for a link from the organization, it may help boost your PageRank. Marginal directories, however, come and go very quickly, making it hard to keep up, so don’t try to be exhaustive here. Beware of directories that solicit you for “upgraded listings.” Unless a directory is widely used in your field, a premium ad is a waste...
URL And Traffic

URL And Traffic

Your URL – domain name – can be directly responsible for boosting your traffic tremendously, with very little effort, once it’s set up. This can only happen if your URL described what you do. “Branding” URL names (e.g. “John Smith Co.”) require… branding: constant promotion. The challenge is to have a keyword-rich name for your site. This method can be tremendously effective in driving organic traffic to your site. If your URL is “the” keyword you’re mining for, then your success on Google – and other search engines – is all but assured. This is really a total no-brainer, and yet you’d be surprised how many people just don’t get it. If your name is John Smith and you sell killer tips for SEO, what URL would you want to register: (A) JohnSmith.com? – or (B) KillerSEOTips.com? (assuming both were available). If you pick the first option, you might have an illusion of “branding” yourself, but you’ll drive no “natural” traffic. But if you pick the second one, your site will be AUTOMATICALLY at top of the search list for anyone who’s typed the keyword “killer SEO tips”. Search engines look at URLs first! Naturally, you will find that SHORT keywords are hard, if not impossible, to register. They’re all taken already. But long keywords work just as well, plus they have the added advantage of being much more specific and thereby they AUTOMATICALLY pre-qualify your potential clients! If I sell noisy but catchy independent trash metal mp3s I could call my site “TrashMetalMP3.com” or I could register “NoisyButCatchyIndependentTrashMetalMP3.com”. You might be put off by the LENGTH of such...
Advanced Twitter Traffic

Advanced Twitter Traffic

The notes below have been taken from a variety of “guru” seminars as well as personal experience. Two of the most influential for me have been Jeff Johnson’s Traffic Voodoo “Twitter Blog Bounce” and Oli Tee’s Zero Down Traffic. Keep In Mind: Twitter is up to 13x more viral than Facebook Use Twitter to follow people in your marketplace Blog post on site, notify Twitter followers automatically ASK them to Facebook-“like” and re-Tweet message Always TELL THEM what to do, e.g. “please help us spread the word by Twitter” Make sure you check out www.linksalpha.com YouTube will auto-notify Twitter Get Twitter followers to your webinar Get Twitter followers to your optin forms to capture them on email followups Google tracks unique visitors to website Tweet about your videos on YouTube Tweet about your articles on other sites Tweet about your Facebook pages Tweet about hot current topics so you can show up quickly in Google’s iUpdate section Tweets are tracked indexed and published by thousands of other websites including Google Google updates (sidebar) shows you all the latest updates – from Twitter, Facebook, etc Pick a hot topic that applies to your market – or figure out a way how it relates to your niche For example, tweet about a famous star but also intermix that with tweets about your site – soon the followers of the star will notice your site Setting up the foundations The “social media wheel” method using Twitter. Here’s the plan overview: Setup your profile Become an instant expert (else you won’t stand out) Attract “buyer” followers (i.e. mosty likely buyers) Monetize Twitter keeps...
Twitter Traffic Basics

Twitter Traffic Basics

The challenge is to cutting through the clutter and quite a lot of work. This method is quite new and not many people are aware of Twitter’s marketing power – even if it does seem pretty obvious that “something” should be possible to achieve here…! Once you’ve set up your Twitter account, you should also sign up to a link cloaking service like Bit.ly (this is because you can’t use long URLs in Twitter messages, and Bit.ly allows you to shorten them greatly). But the extra sign ups don’t end there. The thing to do with Twitter is to build followers and communicate with them effectively through the Direct Messaging system. EverGold is said to be a perfect (free) tool to help you do that. You should also sign up to a tweet scheduling site like tWaitter – and a service called TwitterFeed (to combine Twitter with RSS feeds). As you organize and post your messages, your next job is to get as many followers as you can. You do this by following others first. Use SearchTwitter to help you target your “ideal” prospects – people who are currently talking about the things you are marketing! You can also hook yourself up to TwEllow (a kind of Twitter Yellow Pages). Once you get around 200-300 followers (which will take only a couple of days if you apply yourself well), you can now continue doing the same manually (which gives you HIGHER QUALITY contacts), or your can automate the process (lower quality, but much bigger volume). If you pick the latter method, try Buzzom which is the highest rated tool...
