Article Marketing

article marketing

The challenge with article marketing is to have engaging content and to provide some real solutions that address people’s needs.

This method can be wonderfully effective if your articles are informative and useful. I do not believe this can be as effective as some marketers say, if your content is average or low quality. It just wouldn’t make sense to me.

The whole idea is to get your name out there, establish yourself as a Go-To source for your niche, and attract visits to your site as a result. It REALLY works – if your articles are informative and well-written. When I submitted my first article to eZineArticles I got 13 clickthroughs to my blog within 24 hours! And two of them signed up. That’s NOT bad at all.

While there are MANY excellent article sites out there, I would recommend eZineArticles to start with – easy, powerful and the biggest of them all. But all you need to do is Google “article sites” and you’ll soon discover there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of them out there. Many are also very worthwhile.

Also Google “content distribution” for more ideas on this subject, but before I move on, just keep in mind that your articles must be unique and original, should be keyword-rich, and as a result you’ll need to know exactly which niche your article is targeted at. If you get it right, you WILL attract traffic.

Another excellent writing-related resource are review sites. You’re expected to review other sites – and others review yours. But not only sites. You can review products, companies and anything else you can think of. Here’s one excellent site which also promises to give you free PR and traffic in exchange for your reviews: Discovering Startups.

Other good review sites include ReviewCentre and ReviewMe. ReviewMe is particularly important for bloggers.

High Profile Article Marketing

As you probably know, article marketing is one of the best ways to drive highly-targeted traffic to your website. If you re-focus your efforts towards high-profile article marketing you can generate 10x as much traffic.

Instead of submitting your articles to article directories, you submit them to the top websites and blogs in your market.

So, for example, if you have a blog about sports, you could submit your articles to http://bleacherreport.com/ , one of the most popular sports websites online. If you have a website about weddings, you could submit articles to http://www.favorideas.com/submit-wedding-articles/

Want more ideas?

Are you starting to get the idea here? No matter what market you’re in, there are very popular websites that you could be submitting articles to for massive traffic!

Here’s a list of very popular websites that I personally submit articles to. The list below is a gold mine for building a list of thousands of subscribers. If you published just ONE really good article every day to the following websites, and had a good call to action in your resource box that sent people to your squeeze page, then you would have a highly responsive list of AT LEAST 1,000 subscribers by the end of the month.

The following is a list of sites where you can syndicate your articles.

Write Articles for Others to Use in Websites and Newsletters.

You can dramatically increase your visibility when you write articles in your area of expertise and distribute them to editors as free content for their e-mail newsletters or their websites. Just ask that a link to your website and a one-line description of what you offer be included with the article. This is an effective “viral” approach that can produce hundreds of links to your site over time. You’ll find lots of information on how to do this from the most popular article marketing site, EzineArticles.com. When you create a free membership account, they begin sending you instructions and ideas each week.

Article Marketing Bullet-Points to Keep in Mind:

  • Each article can be used in tons of different ways – don’t just submit to an article site and leave it at that.
  • If you upload an article to an article directory – its often their exlusive article, so it may be better to give it to many blogs who are looking for content – not just article directories.
  • Sometimes an article needs minor tweaking to appear as unique content on various sites.
  • Use long-tail keywords within articles!
  • Look at the PURPOSE of the article. Who’s it aimed at? Where do you want it to end up?
  • Study keywords
  • Looking for ideas for what to write? Got to forums, look for questions – then answer them.
  • Paraphrase people’s responses
  • Read other articles to get inspired
  • Get the title right. Start title with keyword
  • convince reader that you have a solution. Deliver VALUE.
  • Format content nicely
  • 300 words or so is enough
  • Keyword density – how many times you use keyword in article – don’t overuse this. Keep it at around 2% – use two or three times and then use it as your first word/phrase if possible.
  • The final bit of each article is the resource box (information about you). It allows reader to link back to your site and can contain your brief bio plus mybe a mention of your free gift on the squeeze page
  • The reource box can be a call to action too.
  • Many article sites allow you to have at least 2 or 3 versions of your resource box. Experiment with different “signatures” and test them with different articles.
  • Do content distribution as well, meaning: consider giving you article to a specific (popular) website or a blog rather than an article distributor.
  • Find the appropriate blogs through others blogs and, of course, Google. Many websites and blogs invite content – no worries about keywords then

Major Article Sites:

  • ezinearticles.com
  • goarticles.com
  • articlemarketer.com
  • articledashboard.com
  • needanarticles.com – for freelance writers

Don’t overdo adding to too many article sites. This said, you should know that there are many automatic submitters out there. For example: www.submityourarticleforyou.com

Duplicate content

There are many misconceptions about duplicate content out there. Most people believe that Google will penalize them for posting the same article on two different sites. Well, that’s just plain false. You can test that by copying a whole paragraph out of just about any article you come across and Google that. You’ll likely get dozens of matches.

In reality, it seems that duplicate content applies to identical content on the SAME site.

In spite of clear evidence to the contrary, many people stick with the previous definition.

There IS, however, one VALID aspect of duplicate content. Some important article sites will require that you submit original content to them and may even penalize you for not doing so. So – NOT so much Google, but mostly others!

How Many Articles Is Enough?

When I posted my first 15-odd articles I was very proud of myself. I did get some results, but nowhere near to what I assumed I would get for a popular topic like the one I was writing about. I even did such a great job writing those articles that I, immodestly, thought some of them just might go viral… Nothing like that happened.

I took more courses on article writing, and it took a good while before I finally stumbled on the ONE straight-forward answer. And answer which I immediately proceeded to validate and prove that it was indeed correct.

You want to taste some tangible success with article submissions using article directories? Well then, anything less than 100 articles, all with perfect keywords and all reinforcing each other is, basically, futile.

Now, ten or twenty articles is one thing, but a hundred? And, mind you, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. When I checked the top article writers I found, to my horror, that they write… THOUSANDS of articles.

Or do they…?

And thus I came to discover two more secrets of article writing.

Article Spinning

This is simply a cool term for “re-writing.” You can download article spinning software which simply substitutes synonyms for parts of the text in order to avoid the accusation of “duplicate content.” Now, I’ve already partially debunked this myth, so if I’m right – then article spinners are not all that worthwhile. Especially when you consider what they do with your text. Here’s a typical example:

  • Original sentence: “This function is like the one discussed previously.”
  • After an automated “article spin”: “This activity is admire the only talked about before.”

That’s enough of an argument never to use an article spinner again! Even if you do believe in duplicate content with its mythological definition.

Article Outsourcing

A better way to re-write the same article but still make it look like a different article – even to the point of fooling the editorial staff of sites such as eZineArticles.com – is to manually re-write it yourself.

Or… get someone else to do it. DO consult the section about outsourcing further within this site for ideas on that!

In Closing

I’ve learned a lot about article marketing and online marketing in general from Chris Farrell. His site Chris Farrell Membership is probably the best training site for newbies – anywhere in the world. In fact, if it wasn’t for Chris, I would have given up on online marketing altogether as by the time I signed up to his program I’ve already gone through a hundreds different “guru systems”. Highly recommended, even if THIS site too is PACKED with priceless information. But his METHODOLOGY is simply without equal.
